A Great Holiday On The Water
by Claire Lingston

Have you planned your holiday for this year? Is it the same
old place - no new sights, sounds, smells or conversation?
Well how about trying something radically different? Would
you like to have a holiday that will give you lots to talk
about while you're there and also when you come back? Would
you like a holiday that will give you plenty of exercise
whilst being fun (this means you can eat fantastic meals
and not feel guilty!!)?

If you're still interested and haven't yet been converted
why not try a boating holiday? There are lots of totally
different holidays that you can have on the water in
different countries and seas that could keep you satisfied
for years to come.

Why not try canal boats? There is still a host of clean,
pleasant canals in the UK which will take you through
beautiful countryside and even through busy cities. The
boats that travel on canals are called 'narrow boats'. Some
of them are incredibly long but they are have to be very
narrow because the canals themselves are only between three
and four metres wide and boats have to be able to pass at
any point. Canal boat holidays have become very popular in
the UK and companies now hire out beautifully equipped
boats that can sleep anything up to ten people. They have
everything that you will need with modern kitchens and
bathrooms. Some are very artistically painted and those
people who actually live on them full time have plants and
are decorated to make them looked loved and works of art in
their own rights. Still in the UK; there are different
boats for the rivers which are considerably wider and
deeper. One of the most lovely expanses of water are the
Norfolk Broads. Here there is a wealth of natural waterways
that cut through the beautiful East Anglian countryside and
down to the sea at Great Yarmouth. The area is designed for
the holiday maker and you can sample some of the wonderful
pubs with authentic English beer. For those interested in
wild life, you will see lots of types of bird living
naturally and happily among the reeds in all the unspoilt
areas that you will pass through.

If you would like to experience the canals but would like
the chance of warmer weather, you will also find a canal
system in Burgundy, France. This holiday would be wonderful
for wine connoisseurs as the canals run through the heart
of the wine making country and there are opportunities to
'drop' off to sample the local produce in the towns and
villages along the way.

If, however, you feel that these holidays would be a bit
on the slow side there are many companies who will hire all
sorts of craft to trip round the Mediterranean. You have
the chance of having tuition during the first week or, if
you are experienced, you can take the yacht or boat
straight away. This gives you complete freedom to visit the
wonderfully sophisticated resorts of the south of France or
perhaps the Greek islands. The wonderful thing about these
holidays is that you could repeat it exactly the following
year, but it would be totally different. It's a perfect
mixture for the active; you can have speed and the
exhilaration of being on the water combined with chance to
weigh anchor and relax whenever you like; you can see new
sights and eat in different places each evening. This is a
really healthy way of holidaying!

Once you've 'done' the Mediterranean there's the
possibility of having a similar holiday in the Caribbean.
The world is your oyster and there are many to see when
you're on the water.
