Skiing on a Shoestring Budget
by Aponici Orsagli

Although skiing is a remarkable sport very few people can
afford it. Skiing provides adventure, skill, and fun.
Imagine the thrill of whipping down the slopes with cold air
on your face making your cheeks rosy. However, many people
can only watch others have fun because the cost of the
expensive equipment, travel, and lodging in expensive ski
resorts is beyond their budgets. But, do not lose heart, you
can stretch your budget to include several runs of the
slopes and get the most out of your money.
Ski equipment is by far the most expensive item you will
invest in for your ski trip. Add to that poles, boots,
appropriate winter clothing and all other accessories and
you have a hefty bill even before you have made any travel
plans. Try to borrow equipment from your friends instead of
buying it. You can also rent equipment including ski poles,
skis, snow boards and boots at most ski resorts. If this is
a one-off trip to the slopes for you, renting would be a
great idea. Only die-hard skiers find it more economical in
the long run if they have their own equipment.
Whether you buy or rent the equipment, you will still need
to invest in the correct attire that can protect you from
the extreme weather. If you buy this clothing from a regular
store, you may have to pay a packet, but you can find a
bargain in a sporting goods resale shop or even your local
thrift shop. You can find many quality items like warm,
rugged ski jackets and bibs and even state-of-the-art skis
for a fraction of the cost at these places. You can find
some great deals and special sales being offered at sporting
goods stores. It is also a good idea to check online auction
sites, newspaper classified ads and yard sales to find the
equipment you need for a comfortable price.
Once the equipment is organized, you need to plan the travel
and lodging. Staying overnight at a ski resort may be
expensive so try a day trip. You can join up with the
community groups, organizations and churches who routinely
host such trips to local ski resorts. Such trips can give
you the opportunity to save on gas for the drive and travel
with a group of people. You will also not have any lodging
bills because you can return the same day. Even if you
prefer to plan your own ski vacation, there are great deals
offered by some smaller resorts that you can check out. They
often offer packages that include hotel rooms, airport
transfers and lift tickets. You should also check out what
is available on popular discount travel websites. Traveling
with a group of family and friends can also help to reduce
costs apart from making the trip more enjoyable.
However you choose to plan your skiing vacation, spend your
budget wisely! You will enjoy a thrifty trip just as much
as a budget-buster without having to worry about the bills
when you return home.
